Miniature Stool — Senufo
West Africa
20th century
Wood and brass
H 23 cm × W 26.5 cm × D 13 cm
Forms of this type are associated with the Senufo peoples of Côte d’Ivoire and neighbouring regions, where stools have long held a central place within domestic and social life. Used in both everyday and ceremonial contexts, they functioned as seats as well as markers of status and identity.
The present example follows this established structure at a reduced scale. Based on a Senufo form, it incorporates incised patterning and brass elements, giving the piece a more decorative character.
The surface shows variation in tone across the wood from handling and use. The brass elements show oxidation consistent with age.
